Reducing driver rudeness

Professor Baher Abdulhai was quoted in the March 6 Globe and Mail article Rudeness is the new norm on Canada’s busy urban routes.  He shared a personal anecdote about unexpected aggression he encountered while driving in heavy traffic on Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway. He also shared his research on ways to relieve traffic congestion using intelligent systems, as in:

  • Tools that optimize traffic flow on the existing roads, e.g. intelligent traffic lights, or controlled pacing of automated vehicles
  • Tools that manage demand, e.g. congestion pricing
