Smart Cities Roundtable Kicks off the Smart Cities Challenge in Toronto

UTTRI Program Manager Dr. Judy Farvolden, UTTRI-associated faculty Matti Siemiatycki and iCity-ORF partner Dr. Sara Diamond, President of OCAD University, participated in a roundtable discussion on Canada’s Smart Cities Challenge on November 24.

Fifteen participants met in Toronto to share their thoughts, comments and feedback on the Smart Cities Challenge in a roundtable discussion hosted by the Honourable Bill Morneau to launch the Challenge in Toronto.

The Smart Cities Challenge

Canadian proposals for projects using data and connected technology are invited from:

  • municipalities
  • local or regional governments
  • Indigenous communities (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis)

A smart cities approach means achieving meaningful outcomes for residents through the use of data and connected technology. This approach can be adopted by any community, big or small.

Prizes include: one prize of up to $50 million; two prizes of up to $10 million each; and one prize of up to $5 million. Proposals must be received by April 24, 2018.

The goals of the Challenge are to:

    • realize outcomes for residents
    • empower communities to innovate
    • forge new partnerships and networks
    • spread the benefit to all Canadians
