Rick Liu will present his MASc thesis “A social equity lens on Toronto transit network performance using a graph theory approach: Examining node criticality, service redundancy, delays and disruptions” via Zoom on August 5, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  All are welcome to attend.

Many past studies have examined where transit disruptions are likely to cause the largest negative impact on commuters, and which parts of the network have the best redundancy against transit disruptions. This project builds on previous studies by integrating concepts of equity to determine if certain groups have different levels of resilience and vulnerability to transit delays and disruptions compared to others. With the analysis taking place in Toronto, a graph model that models individual vehicle trips instead of routes was needed to accurately compute results for all types of routes, headways, and modes on the TTC network.

Rick Liu is a 2nd year MASc student at the University of Toronto Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering supervised by Professor Amer Shalaby.

His research interests include transit equity, transit redundancy and responses to transit disruptions.

A member of the Transit Analytics Lab research team, Rick presented “Assessment of Toronto Transit Network Resilience and Effects on Social Equity” at TAL 2022 Research Day on July 6, 2022.

He completed his BASc at the University of Toronto in 2020.
