UTTRI associated faculty Dr. Enid Slack, Director of the Institute on Municipal Finance and Governance (IMFG) took part in “A COVID-19 Crisis for City Budgets” on TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin, April 23, 2020, along with Jason Baker, Mayor of Brockville and Craig Dyer, Chief Financial Officer, Region of Waterloo.

The panel discussion centred on cities’ decreasing revenue streams and increasing costs due to COVID-19.

A disproportionately large number of people live in Canadian cities. Are the country’s largest cities hemorrhaging cash as COVID-19 shutters businesses, halts construction, and eliminates transit ridership. Toronto alone is reportedly losing $65 million a week. But police, fire, and garbage collection must still function. Experts discuss the financial plight of cities.
