The movement of some residents from downtown may be a good thing for the City of Toronto, says UTTRI associated faculty Professor Shoshanna Saxe in a radio interview for CBC Metro Morning, January 19, 2021.

Saxe holds a Canada research chair in sustainable infrastructure. She points out that a mild exodus might be good for Toronto because it would “slow things down a little bit.”

“It could provide us with a real opportunity to catch up. Toronto has underinvested in its infrastructure, and Ontario has underinvested in Toronto’s infrastructure, for a long time. And so there are places where we’re really under pressure.”

It could also be a good thing for smaller communities to build in ways that may attract residents away from big cities, says Saxe.

“There’s an opportunity for medium-sized cities to choose to build  vibrant, sustainable, walkable, affordable places. And that would attract people from cities where that type of living is in deficit.”
