The Social Benefits of On-demand Transit

Online Event

The City of Belleville introduced on-demand transit for their evening service in September of 2018. After a year in service, and 3,000 registered users, a research team from the University of Toronto conducted a survey to better understand the social benefits of on-demand transit service. TransitData 2020 Symposium – ONLINE

Online Event

Technological advances and research on methodologies have dramatically increased the availability and quality of automated data that can be used to develop applications that enhance the planning and operations of public transportation systems. Automated Data Systems include: Advanced Fare Collection (AFC), Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), Automatic Passenger Counting (APC), GTFS-RT, on-board video surveillance, but also new sources of passive data obtained from mobile devices, social media and other Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. A series of workshops have been held in recent years to explore both methodological challenges and potential applications, including: Gifu, Japan (2014), Boston, United States (2016), Santiago, Chile (2017), Brisbane, Australia (2018), and Paris, France (2019) .

The next Symposium will be held August 11-13, 2020 in Toronto, Canada, and we are planning to place more emphasis on applications, and substantially broaden the discussion between practitioners and researchers interested in the use of public transportation automated data.

Dr. Brendon Hemily presents “From SOP to DRIP to Business Intelligence: Challenges of Using ITS Data for Transit Planning & Management”

Online Event

Transit technologies such as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Advanced Fare Collection (AFC), as well as others, offer tremendous opportunities to support transit planning and management, but progress in the industry to seize on these opportunities has been slow. Dr. Brendon Hemily has been involved in many projects over the last three decades related to […]

Nico Malfara and Yunfei Zhang present “Applications of Transportation Planning in Practice”

Online via Zoom

This presentation will demonstrate how concepts of transportation planning are applied in practice. Areas of transportation planning such as travel demand modelling, master planning, multi-modal planning, complete streets, transit planning and functional planning will be featured through real-world case studies, such as the City of Mississauga Lakeshore Transportation Studies, City of Brampton LRT Extension, City […]

Willem Klumpenhouwer and Diego Silva present “Living on a fare: Dashboarding fare-sensitive access and equity in major U.S. urban areas”

Online via Zoom

While premium transit modes such as commuter rail can improve access to opportunities, the higher fares that accompany these services create barriers to their use. Fare-sensitive access measures require accurate estimation of fare costs between origins and destinations. They are not often included in public transit access analyses because of data limitations and computational complexity. […]

Mobility Network presents ‘The Way Forward: Governing transit and integrated mobility’

Online via Zoom

New mobility providers claim that smart technology and services – self-driving vehicles, ride sharing – will increase road safety and reduce emissions and that the data produced can reduce congestion by improving traffic flow. Shared mobility and self-driving vehicles may reduce dependence on personal automobiles or they may worsen traffic and by competing with public […]
