Sean Nix, President of the Toronto Section of the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers, spoke on October 27.

Sean’s presentation provided an overview of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). The institute is an international organization divided into eight districts including six in the United States, one in Canada, and one international district.

Membership is free for students for the first year and subsequently $30 per year as long as one remains a student. The institute holds several events including two major luncheons, breakfast seminars, technical training courses, social events, and technical tours. It also hosts an annual student presentation competition for undergraduate and graduate students with cash prizes along with a career fair. The institute offers a number of scholarships to students. Lastly, one of its newest initiatives, called “excite,” aims to help young professionals collaborate with each other and access resources.

Canada’s Toronto section of ITE is the largest in Canada with close to 600 members.  It serves Metropolitan Toronto and all other portions of Ontario not covered by separate Section Charters (Hamilton or Southwestern Ontario).
