UTTRI associated faculty Professor Amer Shalaby says public transit systems in COVID-19 recovery have implemented a variety of measures to keep transit safe for all in “Public transit prepping for new normal as cities and provinces start to reopen,” National Post, May 1, 2020.

Measures include:

  • frequent cleaning and sanitizing of transit vehicles
  • use of apps to allow social distancing for riders
  • apps to allow priority access for essential workers

Shalaby concludes that the combination of high capacity operation and low fare revenues will make it necessary for governments to increase financial support for transit operators in Canada.
