“Estimating traffic emissions associated with the reduction in travel within downtown Toronto as a result of COVID-19 restrictions,” by Dr. Arman Ganji, Dr. Ran Tu, Dr. Junshi Xu and UTTRI associated faculty Professor Marianne Hatzopoulou is referenced in the Toronto Atmospheric Fund (TAF) newsletter of August 12, 2020.

Hatzopoulou received data for an analysis of the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on GHG emissions from TAF and the City of Toronto. Researchers looked at “25 intersections for the period extending from February 9, 2020 to March 15, 2020, which was identified as the “before” period, and the period extending from March 16, 2020 to April 9, 2020, which was identified as the “after” period.”

Comparing “before” and “after” showed that emissions dropped by 60-70% overall.

TAF urges work to implement “solutions to create lasting impacts.”
