“Ask CBC  News” devoted its November 26 episode, entitled “Earth set to warm 3.2 C by 2100, UN report finds,” to “take stock of Canada’s place in the world when it comes to global warming.”

The UN report in question is the United Nations Environment Programme’s latest Emissions Gap Report.

UTTRI associated faculty Professor Steve Easterbrook, Director of School of the Environment, spoke with “Ask CBC News” program host Carole MacNeil and answered viewer questions. His wide ranging responses touched on:

  • Canada, China, India
  • investing in clean energy
  • what the average citizen can do to reduce carbon footprint
  • trees and carbon dioxide
  • predicting future environmental degradation based on current trends
  • impact of food waste
  • models for Canada to look to – Scandinavia, Germany

Easterbrook concludes that “the key target that we should all be focusing on is: Which year will we reach zero carbon emissions?”

Remarking on a recent spate of environmental protests, he adds, “I think that the next big challenge is to get to grips with the scale of the transformation that we have to achieve.”
