The current Ontario government may revive a project to build a highway in the GTA West Corridor, the proposed Highway 413.

Professor Steve Farber was one of four panelists on TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin discussing the pros and cons of the proposal to build a highway; he was not in favour. He said:

All of the evidence shows that new highways encourage unsustainable urban development, car-dependent sprawling neighbourhoods which are unhealthy, unsustainable, and economically inefficient in the long run. And I also think that decades of research, as well as personal experience, in the GTA region shows that building new highways and expanding existing highways does nothing to help us with decreasing travel times in the region. In fact, it’s just the opposite.
