Dr. Willem Klumpenhouwer, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Transit Analytics Lab, comments on the situation in Cobourg, Ontario where commuters who relied on Via Rail service pre-pandemic now have no option but to drive for at least part of their commute due to service cuts.

Klumpenhouwer says that reducing service because of low ridership is short-sighted and can create a “negative feedback loop” where fewer and fewer will opt to take mass transit because of limited service.
