UTTRI associated faculty Professor Matti Siemiatycki talks to Global News about the Greyhound Canada closure:

“Some of Canada’s most remote and impoverished communities are likely to be among those feeling the compounded effects wrought over the lack of accessible and affordable transportation.” – Matti Siemiatycki

Appearing on CBC’s The National, Siemiatycki says:

“These bus services really are providing an important lifeline service in places that for people who are often cut off and don’t have access to a private car to be able to get between communities. … It will be those who are already most disadvantaged who are going to bear the brunt of this.” – Matti Siemiatycki

Canada’s Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra, issued a statement on Greyhound Canada’s closure:

“I’m disappointed by Greyhound’s decision to stop its operations in Canada. We know that many Canadians depend on this service.

We will work with our provincial partners to explore options to address this gap and provide Canadians with safe, reliable and affordable transportation across the country.

Throughout this pandemic, we have worked with businesses that were hard-hit, especially those in the transportation sector. We have been there from the start to provide financial assistance.

We will continue to be there to protect jobs and help support hard-working Canadian families as we safely restart many of these industries.” – Minister Omar Alghabra
