This presentation by Brendon Hemily provided a broad overview on transit pricing and the complex reality of fare policy setting, and provide perspectives on a range of related issues such as objectives, equity, elements of fare systems, fare structures, etc.

An independent transit consultant with over 30 years of international transit experience, Dr. Hemily focuses on best practices and innovation in the transit industry, in the areas of policy, management, planning, and advanced technology. He has been involved in fare policy analyses in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver. From 1985 to 2000, he worked at the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), where as Manager of Research and Technical Services, he was responsible for all of CUTA’s research, statistical, and technical services. He has a Ph.D. in Transportation and a M.S. in Civil Engineering, both from M.I.T., and a B.A. in Economics from Columbia College. He chairs TRB’s Committee on Public Transportation Planning and Development.
