UTTRI associated faculty Professor Matti Siemiatycki comments to CTV News Toronto about the current requirement that new condos in the City of Toronto include a minimum number of parking spaces. According to the article, removing this requirement is will be considered by City council at their December 15, 2021 meeting.

Siemiatycki says that underground parking not only increases the cost of condominium units but also has a heavy carbon footprint.

“The further down you go to build underground parking the more expensive it gets so this is expensive, it’s also bad for the environment, adds embodied carbon,” said Matti Siemiatycki, director of the Infrastructure Institute at the University of Toronto.
