Amy Jiang, Senior Associate at BA group, was at U of T on January 24th to present “The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and emerging directions in transportation engineering.”

She talked about various opportunities at ITE and gave an overview of the organization’s professional development for students. She also addressed future directions in the field of transportation engineering/planning, especially for students who plan to pursue a career.

Jiang talked about the movement from vehicle-centric design to human-centric design, and how today’s streets are not just about vehicles, but also for the people.

Emerging areas in the field of transportation were discussed. Jiang focused on four major areas:

  • complete streets
  • multi-modal transportation analysis
  • modelling. Big Data
  • GIS as a mandatory tool in the transportation sector

The seminar ended with a discussion of the future of transportation from the audience’s perspective.

Visit ITE for more information on the organization.

Presented by the University of Toronto Institute of Transportation Engineers (UT-ITE) Student Chapter.

My presentation will discuss “ITE and Emerging Directions in Transportation Engineering”. The presentation will provide an overview of ITE, particularly as it may be of interest to student members. It will then provide an overview of key facets of transportation engineering, and delve into four key future directions in transportation engineering including Complete Streets, Multi-Modal Transportation Analysis, Modelling, and Big Data. It will share examples of past projects including vehicular and pedestrian micro-simulation. There will be time at the end for open-ended discussion about future directions in transportation.
